Introduction

``` Volume 1 Chronicles of Owari Chapter 1 The Changing Tides
The sun was still shining, the breeze was still blowing, and the group of guys around me was still venting their excess energy. I was just enjoying the surreal feeling (which basically meant I was dozing off!).
What? Who am I? Did I not introduce myself? Sorry! Sorry! My name is Li Zhong, an ordinary first-year student at an average high school in Beijing.
The most standard adjective to describe me is ordinary. 1.7 meters tall, 60 kilograms heavy. Under my somewhat impressive thick eyebrows are a pair of relatively small eyes. I have a face with a moderately sized, well-defined mouth, which compensates for my low cheekbones and somewhat bulbous nose. This appearance makes it impossible for anyone who has seen me less than three times to accurately recognize me among N (2≤N) people. Plus, I have a surname that is so common in China... no! In the whole world!
The above is what I inherited from my parents; now let’s talk about my own efforts to be ordinary. I scored an average of 80 in math and chemistry, 75 in biology, Chinese, and history, 70 in physics, and 65 in English. I’m good at long-distance and short-distance running, average at high jump and long jump, and failed at pull-ups. My principle is to conserve all the energy I can and save all the money I can; as long as it’s acceptable, that’s good enough.
What did you say? I lack ambition? Well, you’re mistaken! Try something I’m interested in! It’ll scare you! To play various Japanese RPG games (both legit and pirated), I bought a dictionary to self-study Japanese. One year! Hehe! My Japanese level has reached... reached... a level that surprises even myself! Whether it’s games or manga, instructions or guides, I can handle them all. As for speaking... that’s not a problem! (As long as each sentence doesn’t exceed ten words; if it does, neither Japanese people nor Chinese learners will understand.)
“Wake up! Old Bear!” A big foot stomped on my stomach.
That unreasonable guy is my classmate and best buddy, Wen Qiu, nicknamed Mixed Ball.
“Get your foot off me! How dare you disturb my top priority in life right now, you’ll regret it!” I swatted his foot away and sat up.
“There’s a saying, ‘Rivers and mountains may change, but human nature is hard to alter.’ I say, Mixed Ball, wanting ‘the bear in winter’ to be diligent is... difficult! Difficult! Difficult!” My other buddy, Gao Meng, said while shaking his head as he walked over. Although his name is Gao Meng, he is neither tall nor fierce. He just likes to use flowery language, so people in the community call him Potassium Permanganate, or simply Sour Fake. By the way, I’m nicknamed Old Bear in Winter because I love to sleep.
We were at a winter vacation class activity, and during the discussion, most people said they wanted a different winter break, so we came to Hainan. We just arrived at noon, and before we even had lunch, these guys were looking for a boat to go out to sea. While they were shouting and showing off their shallowness, I was chatting with the King of Hell after three hours on a plane and the gentle sea breeze.
“What a beautiful view! It inspires my youthful heart!” Mixed Ball said, his eyes filled with little stars.
“Boring!”
“With such a beautiful scenery, what do you think?” Sour Fake asked me.
“Comfortable!”
“Where...?” they both asked in unison.
“Good for sleeping!” I leaned against the railing and yawned.
“Splash!”
Amid the teacher’s late scolding to stop the roughhousing, I was thrown into the sea by these two heartless guys. Although it was 30 degrees Celsius in Hainan, the seawater still made me shiver.
Just as I was about to swim towards the yacht, a thick fog suddenly rolled in over the sea. It had been sunny just a moment ago, but now it was all gray. The boat and the shouting disappeared, leaving me alone floating on the water.
A mass of black mist suddenly emerged out of nowhere and swallowed me whole.
“Ah-choo!” I woke up from my unconsciousness, undoubtedly from the cold. My clothes were still wet, but at least I was on land. I stood up, and it was still pitch black around me. I had no choice but to walk forward.
I stumbled through the night. After a long dark night and the morning fog, the sky finally cleared around noon. The extreme shock made me temporarily forget my hunger from the day and night. I realized I was on a mountain.
“Did I walk to Wuzhishan?” I asked myself.
Looking around, there was no sign of the sea. I was sure I couldn’t have walked from the beach to here overnight. Besides, the plants around me weren’t the tropical ones commonly found in Hainan.
“Wait! What is this? Wild mulberry trees!” I looked at the few trees around me and felt dizzy again.
“Isn’t it said that ‘after five hundred years, the sea turns into mulberry fields’? How come it changed overnight for me!”
“Thud!” I fainted again, this time under the wild mulberry tree.
